The importance of translation in legal cases cannot be overstated. Whenever someone is involved as a suspect, alleged victim, or witness, it is vital to the interests of justice that they can be fully aware of the process and able to communicate and receive communication in a way that ensures cases are dealt with fairly.
However, it is not just after an arrest has been made or when police are interviewing witnesses or alleged victims that a Polish interpreter may be needed. It could be at an even sooner stage that a translation is required to help serve the cause of justice or resolve a missing person inquiry.
Such an instance has just arisen in Cleveland, where police are seeking to solve the case of a missing set of clothes found near the sea at Saltburn on February 7th.
The initial police statement said: “Officers want to identify the owner of the clothes so they can check their welfare.” However, this was initially given in English and did not prompt anyone to come forward.
However, on inspection, it was found the items included a riding rosette bearing the words Leśna Podkowa, Damaszka, which is believed to be a riding school in Poland. This has prompted a further appeal to be issued, this time in Polish.
Police hope this may lead to someone who is Polish coming forward, either the owner of the clothing or someone who knows them.
In cases like this, the availability of Polish translation can help witnesses to provide key information, or even for the individual concerned to come forward and get any help they need in a time of trouble.
While translation can be vital when someone needs legal help to defend themselves against criminal accusations, it can also be crucial when someone needs to get help or, if a missing person case ends in tragedy, to help track down their next of kin, either in the UK or Poland.
