Computers are able to do some extraordinary tasks, from allowing us to search the web, translating texts and now we even have AI technology which has propelled us into the future. However, there are still many tasks that are better done by a person.
Translation is one of these. Although computer programmes such as Google Translate have the ability to effectively translate texts into any language you can think of, the accuracy is often lacking and therefore you may encounter issues with misunderstanding if you solely use computers.
This is especially an issue if you need the help of a translator for serious issues or legal matters where understanding intricate jargon and terminology is important.
Human translators are better able to understand the nuances of language. Computers are able to translate only the literal meaning of words and therefore don’t work very well when translating spoken conversations.
This often leads to the computer-translated text being awkward, nonsensical and lacking specific contextual factors which all aid in determining the meaning of something.
There is also a lack of flexibility when it comes to computers. As they work in a very literal sense, they are unable to adjust the meaning of a text on the spot.
A human translator is better able to analyse the text as a whole taking into account tone, cultural differences and human effort and determining the best, most accurate translation.
This can be very useful when translating important, official documents where words may be used which have multiple meanings and are used in a specific way. Computers may struggle to understand the direct meaning of a word or phrase as they cannot understand different contexts.
Having a person translate for you can often make it much easier to understand as well, as they will have the knowledge to be able to change words or phrases to make a text easier to read and digest.
